Image Properties

Page properties are massively important for any media companies and they must meet the tight
guidelines set for either on screen or for print and they are both widely different within size and pixel dimensions.

For screen

The standard settings for screen / mobile or any more portable devises are :

1064 x 475 Pixels  (these sizes are set by the Internal advertising bureau ) ( http://www.iab.net

Items for print should always be in Pixels which stands for ( Picture Element) .

The standard size the screen resolution also set by the IAB  is 72 Pixels this is ever changing as mobile / portable devices are becoming more and more advance but to date this is still the average set resolution  for screen.

the colour mode used is Vital as on screen not many colours are needed and it also makes are far smaller file format which is ideal for screen promotions or web banners / buttons . The required mode is RGB ( Red Green , Blue ) and this give us the equal colours which give the document the white light we need for screen.

Items for print

The items for print are slightly different and somewhat more advance but are simple to create using programmes such as Adobe Photoshop etc.

using the present settings on Photoshop their is a setting called International Paper , which is the ideal size of A4 !

You must also be using 300 Pixels for resolution as this gives the best quality when printing items for promo purposes and also ensuring that you use the guidelines of size of approx 216 x 303 Pixels .

their is an added 3mm added to each edge of the paper for something called the Bleed which is vital as the image will be printed to edge giving you no White Lines.

the colour format must be RGB whilst creating the document for print and then changed to CMYK for the ultra glossy look when printing items to give the professional look .

As for the Bleed you will need to go into the ruler settings and set the bleed up which is 3mm from each edge on the top , bottom , and both edges . and also set a 10mm safety rule to give the image the best look.

in all the image properties are vastly important in the interactive industry for the best outcome all guidelines must be met.

Launch of brand new student radio station

new student radio station, W.A.C Radio at Warrington Collegiate went on air at 12noon on Wednesday 23rd April, 2014. Run by students, it features a variety of student-produced programmes covering news, current affairs, music and entertainment.

After a welcome massage from 21 year old Interactive Media student, Daniel Miller, from Orford, the first record played was #Selfie by The Chainsmokers, a well-known song, popular on itunes in recent weeks.
A truly student-led project, the name of the station and its logo were created by Daniel. The station’s simple but stylish logo was inspired by students and is funky, bold and bright.
On flipping the switch on his first live broadcast, Daniel says, “As a media student, I’m excited about the launch of the station. I’ve been incredibly busy setting up interviews for this first show.Working on the station is going to be a brilliant experience.”
A short course with the National Student Radio Association  gave Daniel the skills he needed to put together the programme content  including jingles and playlists as well as recording interviews with some up and coming artists, some of whom he hopes to launch on the British music scene.
Daniel explains, “I’m thrilled to have captured the likes of Amelia Scalies, a charting Indie singer songwriter from Pennsylvania, who’s big in internet radio in the states, and UK band, Virgin Soldiers, who were first played in this country on BBC Radio 1. My scoop is American rock band, Dinner and a Suit, popular in the USA, but looking to break into the UK music scene. Remember you heard them first on W.A.C Radio.”
Sharon Lawrence, Lecturer in ICT at Warrington Collegiate, who has been supporting Daniel says, “The radio is an excellent opportunity for our students to develop their broadcasting and technical skills in a professional environment. It will provide that valuable experience in presenting, developing programming, reporting and newsgathering that employers in the media are looking for, and that will benefit them hugely when they progress onto university and the industry.”
The station will broadcast daily with 24/7 live streaming throughout the day and auto-dj out of hours. Listeners can tune in live via radio.warrington.ac.uk
Students can find out more about the extensive range of Vocational Courses and Apprenticeships including Computing and Media at Warrington Collegiate by visiting our Open Evening and Skills Show on Thursday 12th June, 5-8pm.

Shortend animation opening sequence

Here is my shortend version of the opeing sequence for my production assignment for Paradox 1915 . this was created using 3DS Max 2010 .

Differances of Bitmap images to Vector

Bitmap

Bitmap images is something that is either generated via digital photographs or can be generated using programs like Serif or Photoshop these kinds of images are best for websites to give it realism effect but these kinds of images have to stay the same size it came in or was created in this is down to the fact that the image will be made up of thousands of little dots called Pixels that create the image display , if images are stretched or scaled up or down they become pixelated as the programme is trying to guess the colour of the images used.

Vector images

Vector is something that is digitally created usually hand drawn or created by using a graphic tablet using programs like Photoshop / serif but can be created in software like 3d Max and are best for logo’s and animation due to their boldness of colour and also vectors can be sized up and down without any impact to the image this will not become pixelated like a bitmap

importance of Motion Graphic's

Photo from ( cleverfoxes.com )

Motion Graphic's is an important part within many day to day activities such as TV , On line radio's and also the way they communicate with us like the animated screens at train stations, airports etc . Motion Graphics are in use all around us really.

Motion Graphics's are something that grabs our attention within the opening 10/20 seconds of the opening sequence or game , these are items that make us want to watch or play a new film/trailer/TV programme , within the BBC , C4 , ITV etc , all have their logo on the left or right of the screen when watching it back these are called Bugs and show what demand service you are viewing.

Catch me if you can is a good use of motion graphics's as the way the animation has been placed together
and also the way the music has been put together to create a good sound clip behind which gives the audience a feel for what the movie is about.

The (BBC) are one of the companies that always use motion graphics to communicate to their viewers
so they know what channel they are watching and also shows pride within their logo similarly ITV use these these in the same way but the BBC tend to use them more than say ITV.

Motion Graphics's Are also seen in the following locations

  • Video Banners
  • Interactive games
  • Football stadiums
  • shops
  • Doctors surgery's
  • Mobile Phones

Making A plane fly using 3D MAX

3D Max Animation

here is the rendered version of a plane taking off in which I have created within 3D Max Auto desk website.this is useful as this is the type of footage we will be creating again for the paradox sequence at a later date .

(C) Daniel Miller 2014 (C)

Above image is showing the screen shot of the four windows in which we create the animation and also the 3D models which will feature in the paradox trailer , at the bottom of the screen shot you can see were you key frame the animation to give it the animation look you would like.

Paradox 1915 test edit

Here is a test rough edit for paradox 1915 more clips will come soon .

Paradox 1915 Still Image shoot in costume (Jan 14)

Operating the Camera in Manual Exposure

Manual Operation

Within the production of Paradox 1915 we will be using the Manual operation to shoot, This is due to some shots taken at Bolton Abbey were over exposed on Auto operation. As a team we learnt how to operate the camera within various fields that change the light / shutter speed and also the (ISO) to improve the image vastly to give the movie the feel good aspect.

Pic 1: This Image below is showing the whole of the camera setting including the F Setting and also the (ISO) which is extremely sensitive to light.

Pic 2: Showing the (ISO) button in which you can alter by moving the wheel you can see on the below image.

if you watch this clip that was taken at Bolton Abbey you will see how over exposed the clip is on Auto as its trying to adjust from a dark to light shot and makes the shot of the water appear white for a few seconds.

steam punk weapons for use within Paradox 1915

Weapons

Within my pre-production blog (under DIY ) and apart of my Initial planning I have included screen shots of how I have made my Steam Punk weapon on here .

My inspiration came from the above image as it looks perfect for the Paradox 1915 trailer with its look of rust, brass effects all these aspects add to the steam punk feel as well do the bolts and cogs and the piping items coming off the weapon. I will be using my own designed steam Punk weapon for the filming of Paradox 1915 in which you can view on here.

what is Steam Punk ??

Steam Punk

A sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery. Set in an alternative history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American "Wild West", in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has regained mainstream use, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power. The term steam punk's first known appearance was in 1987, though it now retroactively refers to many works of fiction created even as far back as the 1950's or 1960's. Steam punk also refers to any of the artistic styles, clothing fashions, Music etc.

I found this research interesting as I didn't really know of Steam Punk until the topic from my production team was handed down to me to produce a Steam Punk genre film trailer , this information is critical as it initials lots of things to give the movie trailer justice. However I would rate this site 5/10 as it’s from Wiki and can be easily edited. I have however checked the information above and it also say’s similar.

Researching steam punk logo's

Today's task was to research different steam punk logo's ready to create our own for our own trailer for our opening sequence.

Examples/visual reference

Comments: typeface style, colours, materials or textures

The colour’s that are included within this logo is quite dark and within the era steam punk came from this is a good example of the styles. As of the materials used it looks as if the text is set on an old number plate , the images used of the face adds mystery to the design as for textures used , you can see a scratched brass effect with added bolts , towards the end you see clog effect which adds the whole steam punk genre.

The colour’s used within this logo is straightforward as there is not very much included compared to my lost logo but you can see the colour’s used are very limited to brass/copper looking .The materials used are clogs and bolts with added wing effect to add to the steam punk era, the text used is from around the Victorian era from when steam punk came from.

The Colours used within this design are standard copper with red blood splatter / Rusty Metallic the materials used are a badge in the centre with four curved lines to give the sense of flight badge .The textures are quite dark and give the sense of idea that it was set around the stream punk / Victorian era.

The colour’s used within this design are light – dark giving the effect of the Victorian era and the modern revaluation the materials used within this design are pipes, clogs , bolts etc. the textures would be brass and a metallic brass piping.

This Design is written on a banner using the metallic brass colour going into a deep brown on the cogs; the materials are cogs adding the era of steampunk

Soundtrack for paradox 1915

Edit 1 - Soundtrack

Here is a clip of the soundtrack I have created to go with the trailer for paradox 1915. I have chosen this style of music as it starts of quite somber and slowly builds pace in area's where there will be loads of action / Adventure sequences of the trailer towards the end the music gives a sad sence this is ment to be their as their is a twist within the plot which will be revealed on the release of the trailer summer 2014 .

Here is a mash up of what to expect audio wise from the soundtrack to voice over segments we will re-commence filming later this week.

Looking into different styles of opening sequences

Opening Sequences

I have now started to conduct some research on opening sequences on existing steampunk related trailer's here are some of the one's I have looked into.

I think this opening Sequence is good  but could have add more elements added to it as towards the end the sequence looses its rhythm as you know whats gonna be next. However I quite like the music used within this piece the start of the opening sequence where the steam emerges from the screen is a great idea and something I'll look into when producing my own opening sequence. I'd Rate this opening sequence 5/10 as their is elements missing I feel .

Were as the Game of thrones opening sequence is extremely consistent throughout the use of audio is perfect and I'd really like to consider creating an opening sequence like this for Paradox 1915 as it keeps the audience in anticipation what may happen and grabs the viewer immediately.

Producing a Storyboard

StoryBoard

within our production line we had to come up with an effective yet achievable storyboard for Paradox 1915
by getting idea's from current trailers or existing trailers and adapt our ideas to widen our imagination
within the first weeks of our production line we went to Bolton Abbey and shot part of the trailer their with some more needing to be filmed once our storyboards were complete.

Here is my StoryBoard :

Costume Design - Paradox 1915

Within this production as teams we are creating our own costumes ready for the shoot which is happening soon ... here are some items that have arrived and will be used within this production :

Above image is a quick sketch of the jacket I'm planning on making it will include studs on the bottom two pockets and also two small studs on a just to the shoulders and also on the coller of the jacket , I have decided to use studs as they are slightly steampunk and will also add definition to the costume , as well as the studs I will also be adding some fabric motifs to the jacket in place on the right arm , left arm , and also the top right pocket to give it the World War 1 theme .

The image below is the showing different types of items I will be using to create the jacket .

The  image above and below are how the jacket looks to date with the studs now attached to the design soon their will be
Badges ect. added to give it that war enabled look to fit with the paradox storyline.

Here is the final look of the jacket and the top hat with the steampunk goggles which adds to the over hall look I am after for the movie trailer.

Creating Opening Sequence Logo for Paradox 1915

This is the Text I have chosen to use for the production its called "WarLords" in which I have downloaded from a website called DaFont I have chosen to use this text as it clearly fits the decade the film is set in world war I . This text is quite easy to produce in 3Ds Max If you would like to learn how to produce this type of text for other productions I will link to a video which is extremely useful.

When I was Happy with the text. I then decided to add a more complicated item such as a Box behind the text then use the bevel tool to lift it upwards to give that slightly 3D authentic look  towards the opening sequence. I then also made some Bolts etc to the image to give that original steampunk feel towards this sequence which looks Like this:

Within this opening sequence I am hoping to add animation effects to the text title and also to the background which is different to any production to date.

After two sessions I decided to add a stream punk pocket watch which will be animated in due course I also thought about changing the layout to make it appealing to the eye but since that session I have again changed my mind within text and text texture here are the new changes I have made.

Here is a screen shot of how I have created the opening sequence within the 4 screens on 3ds Max 2010 within the top view / side view / left view and the prospective view and how I have gone around positioning items within the 3D software.

colour correcting images

How to colour changing enhances the Image

How was this Achieved using Sony ?

Colour treatment is extremely easy to use with many different methods on offer by using Sony Vegas.
If you go to Event FX and then go to Sony colour correcter then simply change the colour to enhance the image to add a better feel to the film / image , as you can see both images have very bad BLUE Lighting and I have enhanced it to give it the unique feel , This process will be used within the production of Paradox 1915 at the later date during post production.

Film Trailer Reserch

Within my task I had to conduct some film research from Existing movies within the same genre and I have chosen to use ( Fly Boys) and also (The Red Baron) : Here is the research I have carried out .

 FlyBoys :

Genre : Action - Adventre - Drama
                                                                Rating : PG
                                                 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0454824/)

I have chosen to research the Movie (Fly Boys 2007). As it fits in well with the Genre that our Production line have asked us to produce for Paradox 1915.I was particularly interested in using the fight flying scenes within this movie with the explosions as this is one of the effects I would like to use within the production. The VoiceOver and the Music was also well used as it started with lines "Looking Back we didn't know what to expect" this add's the sence of tension right from the word go, the Music was shallow adding the sence of adventure. Both I will Most proberly use within this project. The opening Text "Based On a True Story" overlayed with cloud of smoke coming in giving the illusion their will be loads of drama and action within this movie. As you can See the Box Office Figures it made £38,531 just in the UK alone within the first weekend of its release and the budget of the movie being  $60,000,000  , I will take these movie aspects and use them within the production for Paradox 1915 .
(c) 2014 (c)

The Red Baron
Genre : Action , Adventre, Biography
Rating : PG
( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365675/?ref_=nv_sr_3)

I Have also Decided to reserch the film trailer The Red Baron as again it fit's in with the production for Paradox 1915, I really liked the use of the special effects during the dog fight scences and also the way the Movie has been put together in a whole the text , and the voice over's are really useful and will most definiatly be using this within the production of the movie , I was also impressed with the choice of Music as it starts different to the (Fly Boys) this movie starts of with the sence of a Dream and this is what the films about as the trailer progersses the sound becomes louder with the sound of gun shots etc but the music from the start is still in the background playing faint which is an clever use toward the end you get the sound and feeling of your heart beating which is something I'd like to use within the trailer for Paradox 1915 .
